Tips for a dry mouth

We all have a dry mouth from time to time due to dehydration, stress or nerves but long-term dryness will cause problems with your oral health. Other causes of a dry mouth can be blocked salivary glands, a cold, medication, chemo or radiotherapy and syndromes such as Sjogren’s syndrome.

Saliva plays a very important role in our mouths and not only moisturises, but also helps to neutralise acids in the mouth which helps to prevent tooth decay.

A dry mouth can cause sores and ulcers in the mouth, cracked and dry lips, an increase in tooth decay, mouth infections and a decreased sense of taste.

Some tips for people who suffer from a dry mouth:

  • Increase your intake of water taking regular sips throughout the day
  • Artificial saliva (this can be bought in the form of a spray)
  • Cut down on caffeine and alcohol, including alcohol mouthwashes
  • Suck on sugar free sweets and ice cubes to help stimulate the production of saliva

It is vital to determine the underlying cause of a dry mouth so it is important to visit a dentist or doctor to discuss your symptoms.
