Children's Dentistry
The Bank House Dental Centre started out as a family dental practice. Even though it has progressed to provide the latest treatments available, we still see many families for their dental needs. We believe that maintaining the whole family’s dental health is important and welcome children to our practice in Princes Risborough.
Protecting children's teeth
There are a number of things that you can do to reduce your child's risk of tooth decay and dental erosion. Some useful tips include:
- take your child to the dentist regularly
- take advice from your dentist about protective treatments such as fluoride supplements and fissure sealants
- prevent sports injuries by wearing a mouth guard
- restrict sugary or acidic food and drinks in their diet
- encourage regular toothbrushing
Going to the dentist
It is recommended that children should go to the dentist with their parents as soon as possible. You should then take them regularly, at least once a year. This will let them get used to the noises, smells and surroundings, helping prepare them for future visits. The earlier these visits begin, the more relaxed the children will be. Painless check-ups also help to encourage good co-operation when your child is older.
Fissure sealants
Some children have very deep fissures (crevices) in their permanent back teeth. These can be difficult to keep clean. These fissures can be sealed with a resin film to protect the surface from decay.
Fissure sealants are quick and painless to apply. Fissure sealants can last for several years but regular visits to the dentist are needed to check that they have not worn through.
Fluoride supplements
If your area doesn't have fluoridated water, or your child's teeth are particularly vulnerable, your dentist may recommend extra fluoride in the form of tablets, drops or mouthwashes. You should give these to your child several hours before or after toothbrushing, following your dentist's instructions.
Mouthguards
A properly fitted mouthguard can help prevent broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face or jaw
Our mouthguards are made on a cast of your teeth. As they are specially fitted for your child's mouth, it offers much more protection than something bought off the shelf. They also cause much less interference with speaking or breathing and provide the best fit.
